The Fajita Fiesta Cook-off is a FREE event that honors Hispanic customs and traditions and falls within Hispanic Heritage Month. More than 40% of Hays County is of Hispanic decent. This event will provide an opportunity for the citizens of Buda and its surrounding areas to experience that culture through music, food and festivities.
The cook-off begins Friday night with a margarita making contest. The fun continues Saturday with the cook-off including the following categories; salsa, pan de campo, charro beans, carne guisada and the main category of fajitas with a top payout of $1,000.
The festivities begin Friday with a kick-off party and dance under the pavilion. The night will conclude with a 1950’s-style sock hop with a dance and costume contest. Then things heat Saturday with the following activities: a Grito Del Mariachi contest at 1:30 PM; Mexican Charros performing horse riding and roping tricks at 2:00 PM; a live reenactment of the 1813 Battle of Medina with muskets, cannons and reenactors on horseback at 3:00 PM; followed by the jalapeno eating contest at 4:00 PM. The night will end with a live concert by Tejano singing sensation Shelly Lares from 8:00 to 10:00 PM.
Other activities include performances on Saturday by the David Crockett High School Mariachi at 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM, Lehman High School Los Lobos Mariachi at 2:00 PM and a performance by Crockett High School Drumline at 2:30 PM.
